Who is eligible?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will help people who have a significant and permanent disability and who need assistance with every day activities. This includes people whose disability is attributed to intellectual, cognitive, neurological, sensory, or physical impairment, or a psychiatric condition.

How can I access National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

If the My Access Checker shows that you may be able to access the NDIS you can phone them on 1800 800 110 or visit one of their offices in a launch area. They will then work with you to discuss your circumstances and, if required, develop your individual plan.

If My Access Checker shows you may not be able to access assistance, you can still contact them - even if they can’t provide you with an individual support plan, they can still provide information.

What is the My Access Checker?

My Access Checker is a tool to help people with permanent and significant disability understand whether they may be able to access assistance from the NDIS.

My Access Checker will:

Check you are in one of the current or future NDIS launch sites. If you are not in a current or future launch site, My Access Checker will notify you of this and then give you the option to continue completing My Access Checker if you wish to do so

  • Check you are the right age for the launch area you are living in
  • Ask where you live, but keeps you anonymous by not storing some of you address details
  • Check that you are a resident entitled to support from NDIS
  • Check you have a disability and whether it will last for the rest of your life
  • Ask you about how much support you need when doing certain daily tasks

I may be eligible for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), what happens next?

Your pathway for accessing support depends on your situation, your goals and choices. As a first step, complete My Access Checker online. Your next step is to contact the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and arrange an appointment.

  • Confirm eligibility – at your first appointment, you will meet with a planner to confirm your eligibility.
  • Develop an individual plan – once your eligibility is confirmed you will meet with a planner to discuss your goals and aspirations for the life you want to live and the reasonable and necessary support you need to achieve this.
  • Choose your supports – if you wish, a local area co-ordinator can help you choose your supports based on your individual plan, or you can manage this yourself. This can include choosing your support providers and choosing to change providers where this option is available. The NDIA will discuss your preferences with you, and if you wish, your family and carers too.
  • Implement your plan
  • Choose how you want to manage your individual funding, for example you may:
  • decide to manage your plan yourself
  • nominate another person to manage your plan (called a plan nominee)
  • choose to use a registered plan management provider
  • ask the NDIA a to manage your plan on your behalf
  • want a combination of these options.
  • Choose your preferred support providers.
  • Review your plan - From time-to-time, your planner will contact you to check whether your plan is still helping you work towards your goals.

What happens to my current support?

If you currently receive support, these arrangements will remain in place until you have met with the NDIA and developed your individual plan.

What supports related to mental health support will the NDIA fund?

The access requirements for the Scheme include people with a psychiatric condition who have significant and permanent functional impairment. Most of these participants will have support needs from both the Scheme and the health and mental health system.

Other participants in the Scheme (i.e. those with disability other than a psychiatric condition) may also require mental health services and supports from time to time.

What supports funded by the Scheme?

The scheme will fund supports that assist a person to undertake activities of daily living. This includes:

  • Assistance with planning and decision making and household tasks
  • Assistance to build capacity to live independently and achieve their goals, such as building social relationships, as well as financial management and tenancy management skills
  • Supports to engage community activities such as recreation, education, training and employment
  • Participants can choose to access their funded supports through centre-based services, in-home, day services, community access and outreach services

What supports are funded by the health and mental health system?

The health and mental health systems are responsible for assisting participants with clinical and medical treatment.
The health and mental health systems are responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric conditions and mental illness

This includes:

  • All medical and clinical services such as general practitioners, mental health treatment by psychiatrists or psychologists
  • Care while admitted in hospital, in-patient and residential care
  • Medications and pharmaceuticals

The health system is also responsible for other health related services such as dental care, palliative care and nursing care.
Individuals and families sometimes also have a role in funding the medical and clinical services, such as out of pocket expenses or gap payments. The Scheme will not cover these costs

Making an Agreement with your provider

Once you have chosen who will provide your supports you may want to create a written agreement. An agreement will help to ensure that you and your provider have an agreed set of expectations of how the services will be delivered. A good agreement will also outline what each party’s responsibilities and obligations are, and how to resolve any problems should they arise. When you are developing your agreement you may wish to take a copy of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plan to help guide the discussion. 

Some things you might want to specify in your agreement are: 

  • The supports that will be provided 
  • The cost of supports 
  • How you would like your services to be delivered 
  • The duration the supports will be provided 
  • When and how your agreement will be reviewed 
  • How you and your provider will deal with any issues should they arise 
  • What your responsibilities are in the agreement – for example to work with you to provide services that suit your needs 
  • What notice is needed to end the agreement
